Walking Spheres

A research project funded by a space arts.
Jan 2023 - Jan 2024

Constructing a large hollow sphere, covering in clay, and then rolling across the land to capture and imprint the journey of a particular terrain.

The sphere needs to be resilient enough to be rolled across the land whilst sensitive enough to capture the detail. I am experimenting with a variety of oxides and slips to apply to the surface. Working at such a scale is a challenge. I am taking an incremental approach - I started with a small sphere and am building up. I am keen to see if I can fire the sphere just once, though twice is usual, for a more ecological process.

I am hoping to bring awareness to the fragility and beauty of our landscapes.
